Oakachoy Covered Bridge, Covered bridge in Nixburg, Alabama.
The Oakachoy Covered Bridge was a wooden structure spanning Oakachoy Creek with a Queen-post truss design built from timber. The covered design protected its wooden components and support framework from the elements.
The structure was built in 1916 and recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 for its architectural design. It was destroyed by arson in 2001.
The bridge once functioned as a key passage between two communities, with local residents and travelers relying on it to cross Oakachoy Creek on their way between nearby settlements.
The site is now accessible only through its remains, as the original structure no longer stands. Visitors should be respectful of the surviving stone foundations and charred wooden remnants.
The bridge was built with hand-cut timber and traditional construction methods using tools available in the early 1900s. This type of craftwork is uncommon to see today, making the remaining foundations a window into historical building practices.
