Marathon, Coastal city in Florida Keys, United States.
Marathon is a city in the central section of the Florida Keys in the United States. It spreads across several islands connected by bridges and surrounded by the waters of the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico.
Railway workers gave the town its name in the early 20th century, referring to the long construction effort to build the railroad through the Keys. The connection across the islands was later converted to a road now known as the Overseas Highway.
The Dolphin Research Center offers tours where visitors can watch dolphins in natural seawater pools. The facility works with volunteers who help with daily animal care and participate in scientific projects.
The town has a small airport and sits along the main road that runs through the island chain. Visitors arriving by car will find several access points to the water and numerous boat docks along the coast.
The Turtle Hospital is a clinic that takes in injured sea turtles and cares for them until they recover. Animals that cannot return to open waters live in large tanks where visitors can see them during guided tours.
