Cuchillas del Toa, Biosphere reserve in eastern Guantánamo and Holguín provinces, Cuba

The reserve spans 208,305 hectares, including 6,013 hectares of marine territory with pine forests, cloud forests, mangroves, and coral reefs along the Toa River.

The region received UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation in 1987 and later became part of the Alexander von Humboldt National Park in 1996.

Local communities of 18,300 residents maintain traditional practices through forestry, agriculture, and ecotourism activities across 498 settlements in the buffer zone.

The reserve contains marked trails leading to El Yunque table mountain and Infierno Creek, featuring a 300-meter waterfall and the Great Cave of Moa.

Scientists have documented 928 endemic species within the reserve, including ancient plant genera Podocarpus and Dracaena, alongside the Cuban Solenodon.
