Great Exuma Island

Great Exuma Island spans roughly 37 miles with white sand beaches, clear waters, and numerous coves along an undulating coastline. The terrain features flat coastal areas, mangrove wetlands, and limestone formations that shape the overall landscape.

American colonists fleeing independence established settlements in 1783 and developed cotton plantations on the island. These early communities formed the foundation for the settlements that exist today.

In George Town, locals and visitors gather for regular celebrations where musicians play traditional drums and residents prepare fresh conch, grouper, and other seafood specialties. These gatherings reveal how the community continues its culinary traditions and musical heritage.

Exuma International Airport provides direct flights from Nassau, Miami, and Atlanta, making arrival straightforward for most travelers. Taxis and rental cars are the main ways to move around and explore different parts of the island.

The waters surrounding the island display such intense blue tones that satellites can capture their distinctive colors from space. This remarkable coloring results from the shallow, clear waters and light sand bottom.
