Cape San Blas Light
Cape San Blas Light, Maritime lighthouse in Port St. Joe, Florida, US
Cape San Blas Light is a white square skeletal tower located on the Florida coast that rises about 101 feet above water level. The structure now stands at George Core Park after being relocated and features a modern electric lighting system for its beacon.
The first tower was built in 1849 to guide ships safely away from dangerous sandbars, though storms and coastal erosion forced multiple rebuildings through 1885. In 2014, the entire structure was physically moved to its current location to prevent it from being lost to continuing erosion.
The tower holds deep meaning for local people who see it as a symbol of their maritime heritage and community identity. Walking around the site, you notice how residents speak about it with genuine pride in its survival and restoration.
The tower sits in the pleasant George Core Park, making it easy to find and access for most visitors. You can climb the steps inside, look at exhibits in the keeper's quarters building, and browse maritime items at the shop on site.
Moving the entire tower in 2014 was an extraordinary feat that required a convoy stretching over 900 feet long and taking up two full lanes of road. This remarkable effort shows how determined the local community was to preserve their lighthouse from being swallowed by erosion.
