Terra Ceia Preserve – Frog Creek, Protected natural area in Manatee County, Florida, US.
Terra Ceia Preserve - Frog Creek is a protected natural area in Manatee County that encompasses forests, wetlands, and four man-made lakes connected to the local water system. The preserve contains a mix of native plants and natural waterways that support the local ecosystem.
This preserve was established through acquisitions beginning in 1995 by multiple agencies working together to protect the area. The four lakes were created from excavation pits left over from highway construction projects.
Archaeological evidence reveals human settlements in the Terra Ceia region from 8,000 BC, with subsequent Native American populations establishing shell middens until the 1400s.
The preserve is open from sunrise to sunset with no entrance fee and free access to the public. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as trails can be uneven or muddy depending on recent weather.
The four lakes were created as a byproduct of highway construction when soil was excavated for the interstate project. What began as leftover dig sites transformed into thriving habitats that now support diverse animal populations.
