Edison Bridge, Road bridge across Caloosahatchee River in Fort Myers, Florida
The Edison Bridge consists of two parallel structures carrying three lanes each of U.S. Highway 41 Business over the Caloosahatchee River in Fort Myers.
Thomas Edison personally dedicated this bridge on February 11, 1931, which coincided with his 84th birthday, and he became the first person to drive across it.
The bridge replaced the wooden East End Bridge from 1924, marking a shift from basic wooden structures to modern concrete engineering in Florida's infrastructure.
The twin spans accommodate over 32,000 vehicles daily, with the northbound bridge managing 16,000 and the southbound handling 16,500 vehicles as recorded in 2017.
The current bridge maintains a clearance of 55 feet above the water, constructed in the early 1990s to replace the original 1931 structure.
