Bell Creek Nature Preserve, Protected conservation area in Riverview, Florida
Bell Creek Nature Preserve covers 477 acres with five miles of marked trails running through sand pine scrub, pine flatwoods, freshwater marsh, and oak hammock. The landscape shifts between open wetlands and dense forest areas.
The land was originally slated for residential development with road construction already underway. A land acquisition program and the Florida Communities Trust secured the site for conservation instead.
Native Florida species like the Eastern indigo snake, wood stork, and gopher tortoise live here in their natural habitat. These animals are part of the living ecosystem that visitors encounter along the trails.
The preserve is open from sunrise to sunset, with parking available at the main entrance on McMullen Road. The visitor center operates on weekdays to provide information, and sturdy footwear is recommended since some trails can be wet and muddy.
An abandoned paved road segment lies buried under sand and natural vegetation, marking the transition between what was planned and what nature reclaimed. This hidden road is a tangible reminder of how the land was saved.
