Fort Fraser, Military fort in Polk County, Florida, US.
Fort Fraser was a military installation built in central Florida between Lakeland and Bartow. The site today shows minimal remaining structures from its original construction period.
The fort was built in 1837 during the Second Seminole War under Colonel Zachary Taylor. The site was abandoned less than a year later when military operations shifted elsewhere.
The fort bears the name of Captain Upton S. Fraser, who lost his life in combat against Seminole Indians during the March to Fort King.
The site is located in a rural area and not easily accessible, so plan ahead if you want to visit. Bring water and wear sturdy shoes since the surrounding landscape is mostly undeveloped.
After the United States Army abandoned the fort in May 1838, the structure served as an informal shelter during the American Civil War.
