Newberry emerged in the 1880s during the phosphate mining boom, with the arrival of the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway connecting it to High Springs.
The district reflects architectural styles from different periods, documenting the evolution of rural Florida communities through the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Located 18 miles west of Gainesville, the district offers guided tours and informational signs that detail the history of each preserved structure.
This district maintains structures from the phosphate mining era when German companies were the primary customers until World War I began in 1914.
