Aviation Building, Historical aviation center in Miami, United States.
The Aviation Building is a multi-story structure in Miami that was designed to house aviation education and training facilities including classrooms, workshops, military barracks, a cafeteria, library, and medical clinic. The National Weather Service Forecast Office later occupied part of the building, with radar equipment installed on the roof.
Construction on this structure began in 1925 as a hotel project, but the Great Depression interrupted its completion and led to a change in purpose. It was eventually converted into an aviation facility that served pilot training and weather forecasting operations.
The building served as headquarters for the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation, contributing to the education of numerous pilots and aviation professionals in Florida.
The building is accessible via Miami's regular street network and is located in an established neighborhood with parking options. Visitors should note that access may be limited since the structure remains in use or is part of preservation projects.
During the economic hardship of the 1930s, part of the incomplete structure served as a chicken coop, earning it the odd nickname 'Million Dollar Hen House'. This unusual adaptation reflected the desperate circumstances of the period.
