The Lyric Theater is a restored movie house and performance venue with seating for about 390 people located on Northwest 2nd Avenue in Overtown. The building features a renovated lobby area, ticket counter, and concession stand that serve the main auditorium.
The theater opened in 1913 and quickly became a major entertainment spot in this part of Miami. By the 1930s it had established itself as the heart of nightlife and artistic activity along this avenue.
The theater is now the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater Cultural Arts Complex, run by the Black Archives, History and Research Foundation of South Florida. Its 400-seat auditorium opened in 1913 as a movie and vaudeville house for Overtown, then called "Colored Town"; in 1915 the Miami News called it possibly the most beautiful and costly playhouse owned by Black people in the South. Visitors see the restored auditorium and the "LYRIC" lettering over the green entry pavilion at 815 Northwest Second Avenue.
