The Rubell Museum is an art museum in the Allapattah neighborhood of Miami, Florida, housed in six linked former industrial warehouses redesigned by Selldorf Architects. The single-level layout connects roughly 40 galleries displaying paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos, and large-scale installations.
The collection started in 1993 under the name Rubell Family Collection, when Don and Mera Rubell opened their private holdings to the public for the first time. In December 2019, it moved to Allapattah, took its current name, and opened during Art Basel Miami.
The galleries rotate works throughout the year, so returning visitors often find pieces they have not seen before. The Rubells have long collected works by Miami artists alongside internationally recognized names, placing local voices on equal footing.
The museum is laid out on a single level, making it easy to move through without stairs or elevators. Visitors planning to see several galleries should allow plenty of time, as the connected spaces cover a large area.
The museum holds a research library of over 40,000 art books that sits apart from the galleries and is open to scholars and interested visitors. Works from the collection are regularly loaned to other museums around the world, meaning part of it is always on view somewhere else at any given time.
