Matheson House

Matheson House is a historic residence in Gainesville, Florida, that combines two distinct architectural traditions in a single structure. The first floor displays South Carolina plantation design elements while the second floor features Classic Revival raised cottage styling.

The house was built in 1867 as the residence of James Douglas Matheson, a merchant who operated a dry goods store in downtown Gainesville. It reflects the economic growth and social standing of the family during that period.

The house was home to Sarah Hamilton Matheson, who became the first woman elder at First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville and played a significant role in the community. Her presence shaped how the building is remembered in local history.

The roof features an uncommon gambrel design with Gothic elements including decorative roof finials that set it apart from other Florida houses. These architectural details give the building its own visual character.
