Pleasant Street Historic District, National Historic District in Gainesville, Florida.
The Pleasant Street Historic District spans 770 acres with 259 historic buildings between Northwest 8th Avenue and Northwest 2nd Avenue in Gainesville.
Following the Civil War in the 1860s, emancipated individuals established this neighborhood with residences, churches, schools, and numerous Black-owned businesses.
The neighborhood features Victorian, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Stick Style architecture, representing the evolution of residential design from 1859 through the early 1900s.
Visitors can explore the district on foot to observe the architectural details of preserved structures, including shotgun houses and bungalows from different periods.
The Dunbar Hotel, operating from 1936 to 1950s, hosted performers Ella Fitzgerald and B.B. King during an era when accommodations were limited for Black travelers.
