Old WRUF Radio Station, Radio station in Gainesville, United States.
The Old WRUF Radio Station was a Tudor Revival building that housed reception areas, offices, transmission rooms, and several broadcasting studios. The structure combined functional broadcast production spaces with administrative areas designed to support daily radio operations.
The building was constructed in 1928 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It operated as an active broadcasting center under Major Garland W. Powell's leadership during the Great Depression.
Walter 'Red' Barber launched his broadcasting career as a student announcer at this station before becoming one of baseball's most celebrated voices. The station helped shape early radio traditions at the University of Florida.
The site no longer exists, as the building was demolished in 2021. Visitors can explore its history through university archives and historical documentation available at the University of Florida.
Despite being listed on the National Register, the building was demolished in 2021 because relocation costs were deemed too high. This decision highlighted the tension between preservation and urban development pressures.
