Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Football stadium in Gainesville, United States
Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is an American football venue in Gainesville, Florida, serving as the home ground for the University of Florida team. The seating surrounds the playing surface in several tiers, forming an enclosed bowl with space for more than 88,000 spectators.
Architect Rudolph Weaver designed the original facility, which opened in November 1930 and has since served as home to the Florida Gators. Businessman Ben Hill Griffin later funded a major expansion, leading to the venue being named after him in 1989.
Fans call the venue simply The Swamp because the heat and humidity can surprise even seasoned visitors from other regions. On game days, the alligator call sounds through the speakers while the crowd responds in the club colors of orange and blue.
The main entrance on Gale Lemerand Drive leads directly to parking areas and connects with several campus bus routes. Arriving early makes it easier to find a spot and explore the grounds before crowds build up.
Researchers developed the sports drink Gatorade here during the 1960s to help players stay hydrated in Florida heat. The drink takes its name directly from the team mascot, the alligator.
