Century Tower, Bell tower at University of Florida, US
Century Tower is a bell tower on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida, standing about 157 feet (48 meters) tall and housing 61 bells arranged inside the structure. It is visible from many parts of the campus and serves as one of the most recognizable landmarks on the grounds.
The tower was built in the early 1950s to mark the university's centennial and to honor students who died in both World Wars. Over the decades it has come to stand as one of the most enduring symbols of the university's past.
During the academic year, the bells ring twice a day, and many students time their walks or breaks around these moments. The sound has become a natural part of daily life on campus, recognized by anyone who spends time there.
Carillon concerts take place on weekdays during the academic term, usually in the early afternoon and early evening, and can be heard for free from the surrounding area. Standing close to the tower gives the clearest sound, as the bells carry better at short range.
The largest bell in the tower weighs over 3,000 kilograms and produces a low, resonant tone that stands out clearly from the other bells. Anyone standing close when it strikes can feel the vibration as much as hear it.
