Century Tower, Bell tower at University of Florida, US
Century Tower is a bell tower on the University of Florida campus containing 61 bells arranged within a 157-foot (48 meter) tall structure. The tower serves as a landmark visible from many areas across the grounds.
Construction began in 1953 to celebrate the university's one-hundredth year and honor students who died in both World Wars. The bells came from a foundry and were chosen specifically to commemorate these purposes.
The bells sound twice daily during the academic year, creating moments of reflection across campus. These sounds have become a daily marker of time for students and visitors walking the grounds.
Visitors can hear carillon concerts on weekdays during academic terms in the early afternoon and early evening hours. The sound carries best when you are near the tower, making close proximity ideal for listening.
The largest bell weighs more than 7,000 pounds and rings every hour on a low, resonant note. This deep sound creates a distinctive signature across the campus.
