Society of the Four Arts, Botanical and sculpture gardens in Palm Beach, Florida

The Four Arts Gardens combines botanical displays with outdoor sculptures across 2.2 acres along the Intracoastal Waterway in Palm Beach. The grounds present numerous tropical plants and artworks arranged throughout a connected green space.

The Four Arts Botanical Gardens opened in 1938, planned in the 1930s by seven society ladies and one gentleman as themed garden rooms. Founder Mrs. J.S. Phipps built a Spanish façade, Mrs. Joseph F. Gunster a moonlight garden, and Mrs. Lorenzo Woodhouse a Chinese garden in memory of her daughter. In the 1950s the firm Innocenti & Webel was retained to link the separate elements and add rare specimen plants.

The Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden displays works by international artists throughout the grounds. Visitors also find demonstration gardens that showcase Chinese and Spanish landscaping traditions.

The gardens are open seven days a week and admission is free. The 2004 reconstruction added improved walkways for wheelchair access, more seating, and modernized irrigation and drainage kept out of sight. The two libraries on the campus serve as the Town of Palm Beach's public libraries.

The moonlight garden was created by Mrs. Joseph F. Gunster, who planted white-blooming vines and shrubs so the beds would read after dark. It is one of seven demonstration gardens planned in the 1930s by seven society ladies and one gentleman, each showing a different landscaping style for South Florida.
