The Square, Shopping and entertainment center in West Palm Beach, US
The Square, formerly known as CityPlace, is a mixed-use development in downtown West Palm Beach, Florida, combining retail stores, restaurants, offices, and residential units along South Rosemary Avenue. The complex spans several city blocks and connects its different sections through wide pedestrian paths and open plazas.
The site opened in 2000 under the name CityPlace, turning a struggling part of downtown West Palm Beach into a commercial and residential hub. Over the following years the project was expanded and eventually rebranded as The Square.
The Harriet Himmel Theater occupies a former church from 1926 that now hosts concerts, theater performances, and local events. Visitors walking through the outdoor areas often come across live music or street performances between the buildings.
The complex is easy to explore on foot since the paths between shops, restaurants, and plazas are clearly laid out. Public transit stops nearby and connects the area to other parts of West Palm Beach and the broader region.
The facades were designed by architects who looked to the historic buildings of Palm Beach rather than to typical American malls as a reference. The result is a streetscape that feels closer to a southern European town than to a Florida suburban center.
