A. E. Backus Gallery & Museum, Art museum in Fort Pierce, Florida.
The A.E. Backus Museum and Gallery spans 8,000 square feet and contains the largest public collection of paintings by the Florida landscape painter A.E. Backus.
The institution opened in 1961 as Fort Pierce Art Gallery, with A.E. Backus serving as its first director after community donations funded the construction.
The museum exhibits works from the Florida Highwaymen, a group of African American artists who created landscape paintings during the mid-20th century.
Visitors can explore the museum Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Sunday from noon to 4:00 PM at 500 North Indian River Drive.
The facility features four exhibition wings with rotating displays, an outdoor Mural Plaza, and a multimedia exhibition dedicated to the Florida Highwaymen artists.
