McKee Botanical Garden, Botanical garden and nonprofit organization in Vero Beach, Florida.
McKee Botanical Garden is a botanical garden spread across 18 acres of tropical land in Vero Beach, with more than 10,000 native and exotic plant species throughout the property. The grounds are crisscrossed with paths that guide visitors through different planting areas.
The property was founded in 1932 by Arthur McKee and Waldo Sexton and was originally called McKee Jungle Gardens. In its early years it drew large numbers of visitors and became a popular destination in the region.
The name comes from Arthur McKee, an early owner who shaped the grounds with tropical plantings. Visitors today see carefully arranged plant collections throughout the property, showing how people have shaped this landscape over many decades.
The garden is easy to explore on foot, with plenty of paths for visitors of all mobility levels. It is wise to wear sturdy shoes and bring water, especially on hot days.
The property houses an impressive collection of water lilies with around 100 different varieties growing in several ponds. This collection is one of the largest of its kind in the southeastern part of the region.
