Old Indian River County Courthouse, National Register site in Vero Beach, Florida.
The Old Indian River County Courthouse is a three-story court building in Vero Beach that combines Masonry Vernacular and Art Moderne architectural features. Located at 2145 14th Avenue, the structure now houses administrative offices and serves the county government.
The building was designed by architect W.H. Garns and built between 1936 and 1937 with funding from the Public Works Administration during the Great Depression. Its construction was part of federal programs aimed at creating jobs and modernizing regional infrastructure during this economic crisis.
The courthouse served as the center for legal matters and civic activities in Indian River County for generations. Its role as a public building made it a gathering point where residents conducted official business and witnessed community affairs.
The courthouse is centrally located in Vero Beach and easy to find on 14th Avenue with its distinctive three-story structure. Since the building now functions as an administrative center, visiting hours follow standard office hours and entry may be subject to building policies.
James T. Vocelle played a key role in securing federal funding for the project in the early 1930s. His efforts made it possible to construct the building during economic hardship, showing how local leadership helped bring state resources to the region.
