Crawler-transporter, Vehicle transport system at Kennedy Space Center, United States

The crawler-transporter measures 40 meters long, 35 meters wide, and stands between 6.1 to 7.9 meters tall, moving spacecraft across the launch complex.

Since 1965, these machines have transported Saturn V rockets, Space Shuttles, and current spacecraft from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Complex 39.

The National Register of Historic Places and American Society of Mechanical Engineers recognize these transporters as landmarks of engineering advancement.

Operating at 1.6 kilometers per hour when loaded, the transporter requires a team of 30 engineers and technicians to maintain precise control during operations.

The tracked vehicle system maintains perfect level position while carrying 5,400 metric tons across the crawlerway using laser guidance technology.
