Jules Andre Smith established the center in 1937 as The Research Studio, creating an art colony that welcomed notable artists including Milton Avery and Ralston Crawford.
The center maintains an artist residency program, offers art classes, and showcases exhibitions while preserving its status as Central Florida's first National Historic Landmark.
The facility includes three distinct outdoor spaces for events: the Main Garden, the Chapel, and the Mayan Courtyard, which serve as venues for weddings and gatherings.
The center represents one of the remaining examples of Mayan Revival architecture in the Southeast, incorporating Art Deco elements with Mayan, Christian, and Asian influences.
