Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge, National Wildlife Refuge in Volusia County, Florida.
Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area in central Florida that spans freshwater marshes, hardwood forests, lakes, and streams connected to the St. Johns River System. The landscape includes open water, dense shrubland, and elevated wooded areas supporting different types of ecosystems.
This refuge was established in 1964 to protect the rapidly disappearing wetlands of central Florida. Its creation reflected a national effort to save habitats for migratory birds through federal conservation programs.
The refuge is named after a local landowner whose family shaped this area for generations. Walking through the wetlands today, you can see how wildlife and plants coexist in their natural patterns without human interference.
The refuge is reached through Mud Lake Road from Highway 17 near DeLeon Springs and offers trails for walking and cycling. Visit between October and May for the most comfortable weather and the best chance to spot birds and other wildlife.
This refuge forms a vital link in an ecological corridor stretching roughly 70 miles from the Wekiva River to Lake George. This connection allows wildlife to move freely between habitats and maintains genetic diversity across the region.
