Broadway Bridge, Road bridge in Daytona Beach, United States
The Broadway Bridge is a road bridge spanning the Halifax River and Intracoastal Waterway with four traffic lanes and pedestrian walkways on both sides. The structure rises high enough above the water to allow regular boat traffic to pass underneath without any moving parts.
The original structure completed in 1912 supported an electric streetcar line connecting Daytona, Daytona Beach, and Seabreeze across the river. This bridge is a later replacement that has served as a major road connection for nearly a century.
Glass tile mosaics decorate the bridge piers and pedestrian areas with images of regional wildlife such as manatees, dolphins, and eagles in large, colorful designs. The artwork makes crossing the bridge feel like a visual journey through Florida's natural world.
The generous clearance beneath the bridge allows boats and ships to pass without delays or interruptions. Pedestrians and cyclists can use the sidewalks on both sides to cross safely.
The bridge uses a specialized construction method with precast segments that have varying depths along their length. This engineering approach allowed for a cost-efficient and durable span that distributes weight effectively.
