Lake Chehaw, body of water

Lake Chehaw is a reservoir in Georgia covering about 1,400 acres and created by a dam across the Flint River. The water is shallow, averaging 17 feet (5 meters) deep, with winding shorelines that narrow into creeks and flat areas where submerged plants and fish are visible near the surface.

The reservoir was created in the early 1920s when a concrete dam was built across the Flint River, originally for power generation. It is now operated by Georgia Power and continues to control water flow while generating electricity from turbines within the structure.

The reservoir was formerly called Lake Worth and remains an important gathering place for anglers and boaters from the surrounding region. Its irregular shoreline follows the path of rivers and creeks, creating a natural landscape that shapes how visitors experience and use the water.

Three public boat ramps allow visitors to launch boats and explore the water by canoe, kayak, or rowboat. Chehaw Park surrounding the reservoir provides parking, restrooms, picnic areas, and marked fishing docks for easy access to all activities.

In 1994, Tropical Storm Alberto caused severe flooding that breached the banks and displaced thousands of people. This event led to extensive repairs and reinforcement of the dam to prevent future flooding.
