Cairo lies thirty miles north of Tallahassee, Florida, covering 9.8 square miles of land with a population of 10,179 residents.
The settlement began in the early 1800s when William Hawthorne, a Baptist preacher, cut a forty-mile trail and built his home at Tired Creek.
The Roddenbery Memorial Library features a specialized children's section, a story garden, and an extensive genealogy collection in its 19,000-square-foot building.
The city maintains several elementary schools, Washington Middle School, and Cairo High School, which serves the entire Grady County student population.
