Tallapoosa County extends over 700 square miles of varied landscape with light clay soils on ridges and rich loam in valleys, divided by the Tallapoosa River.
The county formed on December 18, 1832, from Creek Indian territories through the Treaty of Cusseta, with Okfuskee serving as the initial county seat until 1838.
Manufacturing represents 23.1 percent of the workforce, while educational services and healthcare employ 21.3 percent of the county's population across various institutions.
The county commission includes five elected members from different districts, each serving four-year terms and rotating the chairperson position every nine months.
Lake Martin spans 44,000 acres within the county borders, providing recreational spaces at Wind Creek State Park with extensive water activities and camping facilities.
