Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church
Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Baptist church in Auburn, Alabama
Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church is a wooden structure built from hand-hewn logs that were transported and assembled into a traditional building form. The building sits at the intersection of Thach Street and Auburn Drive South and now houses the Auburn Unitarian Universalist Fellowship after its restoration in 1970.
This was the first African American religious building constructed in the Auburn area after the Civil War ended in 1865, founded by a newly freed community. Its creation marked the beginning of organized religious life for African Americans in the region.
This structure stands as a reminder of how African American families worked together to build something sacred and permanent for themselves after the Civil War. It shows the commitment of the community to create their own worship space rather than rely on others.
The location at the intersection of two main streets makes it straightforward to find and visit. Since it is an active worship space, you may want to check ahead for visiting times that work with the congregation's schedule.
The wooden logs used to build this structure were sourced from distant locations and hauled in by mule-drawn carts, which shows the extraordinary effort the community invested. This multi-year construction project was a remarkable logistical achievement for the era.
