Auchumpkee Creek Covered Bridge, Covered bridge in Upson County, United States.
Auchumpkee Creek Covered Bridge is a traditional wooden structure with a metal roof and stone foundations that spans the creek. The interior shows the characteristic lattice framework held together by wooden pegs at each joint.
The bridge was built in 1892 using a patented lattice design from the 19th century that proved effective for durable wooden structures. This construction method was common throughout the region during that era for crossing waterways.
The bridge stands near the Hootenville Community, where it has long served as a gathering point for locals crossing the creek. You can still see how the wooden structure shapes the landscape and connects the two sides of this rural area.
The bridge sits about 10 miles southeast of Thomaston and can be reached via Allen Road. Allow time for a short walk through the countryside to find it, and note that signage in this rural area is minimal.
The structure uses wooden pegs instead of metal nails to hold its timber frame together at the joints. Despite extensive restoration work over the years, roughly 30 percent of the original wood remains in the structure.
