The College Football Hall of Fame is a sports hall of fame for college football in Atlanta. The facility showcases collections about players and coaches who gained recognition for their achievements in American college athletics.
The National Football Foundation founded the Hall in 1951, and its first inductees that year included Jim Thorpe, Red Grange and Knute Rockne. After a 1978 building at Kings Mills, Ohio, closed in 1992, South Bend, Indiana, hosted the Hall from August 25, 1995, until December 2012. The $68.5 million Atlanta museum opened on August 23, 2014.
Inductees are chosen by the 10,000 members of the National Football Foundation, organised in 119 local chapters, with a selection committee making the final call. The first class, chosen in 1951, included Jim Thorpe, Red Grange and Knute Rockne. Notre Dame leads all schools with 42 enshrined members, ahead of Michigan State with 29 and USC with 28.
The building sits in downtown Atlanta and is accessible by public transport. Visitors can try some drills on an indoor playing field, which works well for groups and families.
The selection committee requires players to have been named to a first-team All-America squad during their final college year. Beyond athletic success, candidates must also have shown good conduct off the field.
