Grady Memorial Hospital, Public hospital in downtown Atlanta, United States
Grady Memorial Hospital is a public facility in downtown Atlanta featuring a large Romanesque Revival building with several modern additions. Numerous departments spread across multiple floors, including sections for trauma, burns and stroke treatment.
The facility opened in 1892 as the Atlanta Benevolent Home with just 14 rooms and later took the name of journalist Henry W. Grady. Over the decades it grew into a major medical center now known especially for its emergency and trauma care.
The facility serves patients from many different communities across the city each day and plays a central role in Atlanta's public health network. Its name honors journalist Henry W. Grady, who advocated for modernizing the American South during the 1880s.
You can find the complex on Jesse Hill Jr Drive near downtown, accessible through several bus lines and the Five Points metro station. Main entrances sit at the front and back of the main building, and several parking areas lie nearby.
The building appears on the National Register of Historic Places as a witness to southern medical architecture in the United States. At the same time it serves as a training ground for medical students from two universities, connecting historic structure with contemporary teaching.
