Equitable Building, Commercial office building in downtown Atlanta, United States
The Equitable Building is an eight-story office structure located on Edgewood Avenue SE in downtown Atlanta. Its four elevators and height of roughly 36 meters (118 feet) were state-of-the-art features for a commercial building of its time.
The structure was designed by renowned architects Burnham and Root in 1892 and remained the tallest building outside the State Capitol in Atlanta until 1897. It was demolished in 1971 to make way for new urban development projects in the city.
The building represents Atlanta's transformation into a major business center following the Civil War, reflecting the era's commercial ambitions. Its presence shows how businessmen like Joel Hurt reshaped the city through investments in modern office spaces.
The location sits in the heart of downtown and is easy to reach on foot from the historic core of the city. The area offers straightforward access to other commercial districts and public spaces in the immediate vicinity.
Joel Hurt, a streetcar magnate and influential developer of Atlanta, commissioned this pioneering commercial building. His vision helped bring modern office development to the city and showed how private enterprise shaped the urban landscape.
