Wheat Street Baptist Church

Wheat Street Baptist Church is a Protestant house of worship located in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood of Atlanta. The building features 1920s design with brick walls and large stained glass windows that fill the interior with colored light.

The congregation was founded in 1869 and moved to its current building in 1921 after a fire destroyed the earlier structure. During the decades that followed, it emerged as a vital spiritual and social center for Atlanta's African American community.

The church takes its name from a street with roots in African American commerce and life. Today it functions as a gathering place where the community comes together for worship and mutual support.

The church is located along a main street in the neighborhood and is easily found by visitors. Since this is an active house of worship with regular services, it is best to plan your visit in advance to avoid disrupting ongoing activities.

In the 1950s the congregation established one of the earliest credit unions serving African Americans. This forward-thinking move showed how a church could help its members achieve financial independence and build wealth.
