The church stands at 359 Auburn Avenue Northeast with a traditional 1920s architectural design featuring masonry walls and large stained glass windows.
Founded in 1869, Wheat Street Baptist Church moved to its current building in 1921 after the previous structure burned in the Great Atlanta fire of 1917.
During the Civil Rights Movement, Reverend William Holmes Borders led the congregation from 1937 to 1988, influencing young Martin Luther King Jr.
Sunday services begin at 10:30 AM with mask requirements, while Bible study sessions occur online every Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
In 1956, this church became the first African American religious institution in the United States to establish a federal credit union.
