Abbeville, County seat in Abbeville County, South Carolina, United States
Abbeville is a city in Abbeville County situated in the Piedmont Upland region with many 19th-century buildings in its historic district. The downtown area retains the architectural character of this earlier period throughout its core streets and blocks.
French Huguenot settlers founded Abbeville in 1764 and named it after a French town of the same name. The settlement became officially incorporated as a city in 1840.
The Opera House downtown serves as a gathering place where residents and visitors watch theatrical performances and musical events. This tradition of arts and entertainment shapes how people experience the center of town.
The downtown area is compact and walkable, allowing visitors to explore the main sights on foot without difficulty. The streets are laid out in a clear pattern that makes navigation straightforward.
The Burt-Stark Mansion hosted the final Confederate cabinet meeting in 1865, where Jefferson Davis confirmed the end of the Confederate government. This moment marked a turning point in American history that took place within these walls.
