The Abbeville Historic District extends between Seaboard Coast Line tracks and South Carolina Highway 72, containing residential structures and commercial buildings from different periods.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, the district underwent boundary modifications in 1984 to include additional areas along North Main Street.
The Abbeville Opera House and County Courthouse stand as central architectural elements, representing the district's role in local government and entertainment functions.
The district encompasses 528 properties, including 37 significant structures, 282 supporting buildings, and 209 non-contributing sites spread across multiple streets.
Major fires between 1872 and 1873 led to extensive rebuilding, resulting in a concentration of late 19th and early 20th-century commercial architecture.
