Walter Rogers Furness Cottage, Historic house in Jekyll Island, Georgia, United States.
The Walter Rogers Furness Cottage is a residential building on Jekyll Island with two and a half stories and twelve rooms. The structure features a J-shaped covered porch and a Juliet balcony as distinctive architectural elements.
The cottage was built between 1889 and 1891 as a residence for publisher Joseph Pulitzer. In 1930 it was converted into a medical facility and operated as an infirmary until the Jekyll Island Club closed in 1942.
The cottage reflects how wealthy American industrialists wanted their homes to look during the 1890s. Its design shows the taste for comfort and detail that defined their way of living.
The building underwent major renovations in 2017 and now displays a pale blue exterior that is easy to spot. Inside you will find a museum visitor center and a gift shop.
The house was built by a famous newspaper publisher whose name remains notable in journalism history. Its conversion to a medical facility in the 1930s shows how wealthy homes found new purposes during the twentieth century.
