Sea Island lies on the Atlantic coast of Georgia and stretches roughly 5 miles between salt marshes and coastal forest. This barrier island belongs to the Golden Isles group and features wide sandy beaches on its eastern side along with sheltered waterways inland.
Industrialist Howard Coffin purchased the landmass in 1926 and opened the Cloister Hotel two years later as an exclusive destination. During World War II the property served temporarily as a recovery location for military personnel.
The Georgian Room restaurant maintains culinary excellence through traditional Southern recipes and fresh local ingredients, earning multiple Forbes Five-Star ratings.
Only hotel guests and residents of the private development have access to the grounds via a causeway from neighboring St. Simons. Outsiders cannot freely enter or explore the beaches or other areas.
In 2004 the heads of state and government from G8 countries met here for a summit conference. Over several days they discussed international development issues and economic topics within the resort facilities.
