Riverbanks Zoo, Zoo and botanical garden in Columbia, United States
Riverbanks Zoo is a zoo and botanical garden along the Saluda River in Columbia, South Carolina, spanning 69 hectares (170 acres) and home to more than two thousand animals plus over four thousand plant species. The grounds divide into several thematic zones with enclosures, greenhouses, and outdoor gardens linked by paths and bridges.
Business leaders in Columbia began planning in the early 1960s and opened the facility along the riverbank in 1974. Since then, new animal zones and gardens have been added gradually, expanding the original site.
The botanical garden takes its name from the Saluda River and houses curated collections from multiple climate zones. Families spend entire afternoons here observing animals up close in enclosures that mimic natural habitats.
The grounds open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM and offer accessible pathways throughout for strollers and wheelchairs. Weekends and warm days can bring heavier visitor flow in certain sections.
In the Waterfall Junction area, children can experiment with water features and redirect small streams. This interactive zone combines playful learning with direct outdoor contact with nature.
