Johns Island, Coastal island in Charleston County, South Carolina, United States
Johns Island is a flat coastal island southwest of Charleston in South Carolina. The island spreads over forests, farmland and marshes, crossed by quiet waterways and narrow side roads.
English settlers arrived from Barbados in the late 17th century and built large plantations. After the Civil War the plantation economy collapsed, and smaller farms emerged across the island.
The name comes from Saint John Parish, established by settlers from Barbados in the 17th century. Residents today live in scattered communities between wide fields and small shops.
The island is reached by bridges from Charleston and is best crossed by car on quiet country roads. Visitors find shops and rest stops mainly along the main road Maybank Highway.
Angel Oak, one of the oldest trees east of the Mississippi, has grown on the island for centuries and draws visitors from all regions. The grounds around the tree lie in a small park open to enter freely.
