John's Island Presbyterian Church
John's Island Presbyterian Church, Historic Presbyterian church on Johns Island, South Carolina.
John's Island Presbyterian Church is a wooden T-shaped house of worship with two entrance doors at the front and arched windows framed with wooden shutters. The building occupies several acres of land and preserves its original interior arrangement with balcony seating.
Presbyterian believers established their first sanctuary in 1719 with Reverend Archibald Stobo as their founding minister. The building underwent major expansions in the early 1800s and has remained in active use ever since.
The building follows the simple design of colonial meeting houses, with a basic wood frame and interior balcony that shows how congregations worshipped in early American times. Visitors can still see how the space was arranged to bring people together for prayer and preaching.
The house of worship sits on Johns Island west of Charleston and welcomes visitors during regular service times. The interior space is intimate, allowing visitors to observe the wooden structure and original architectural details without difficulty.
This wooden church ranks among the oldest continuously operating ones in South Carolina, and it still functions much as it did centuries ago. That unbroken continuity makes it rare evidence of religious practice extending back to colonial times.
