Benedict College, Private liberal arts college in Columbia, United States
Benedict College is a private liberal arts institution in Columbia, South Carolina. The campus extends over a former plantation site and includes five buildings listed as historic landmarks, among them Morgan Hall and Antisdel Chapel.
The institution opened in 1870 after Bathsheba Benedict provided funds to establish an educational center for formerly enslaved African Americans. Over the following decades, the college expanded its offerings and became an important center for higher learning in the region.
The Marching Tigers appear regularly at regional events and connect older traditions with the needs of today's campus life. They represent an educational tradition that began after the Civil War and continues to bring together generations of students.
The institution offers 29 degree programs across 12 departments, designed for both full-time students and working adults. Course offerings include modern fields such as cyber security and e-sports as well as traditional liberal arts subjects.
In 2018, the college reduced its tuition by 26 percent, becoming the first institution in South Carolina to make such a financial decision. This move aimed to ease access to higher education for more families.
