Charleston Naval Shipyard, former U.S. Navy ship building and repair facility located along the west bank of the Cooper River, in North Charleston, South Carolina, United States
Charleston Naval Shipyard is a former military shipyard in North Charleston, South Carolina, situated along the west bank of the Cooper River. The grounds contain dry docks, large assembly buildings, and warehouses that were built and expanded throughout the 20th century.
The shipyard was established by the US Navy in 1901 and grew into one of the key naval facilities on the East Coast over the following decades. It remained active through both World Wars and the Korean War before being decommissioned in 1996 as part of a round of military base closures.
Many families in North Charleston had at least one member who worked at the shipyard, which made it a central part of life in the area for much of the 20th century. Today, a section of the former grounds has been turned into a public park where retired warships are moored and open to visitors.
Most of the former shipyard grounds are not open to the general public, but a section has been redeveloped as a heritage site that can be explored on foot. Combining a visit with the nearby museum campus, where historic vessels are moored along the river, makes for a fuller experience.
After the 1996 closure, the city of North Charleston negotiated to take over much of the land, which led to one of the more unusual waterfront redevelopment projects in the American South. As a result, the old naval grounds now contain a mix of museums, offices, and green spaces sitting directly on former dry dock infrastructure.
