Kimbel Library, Academic library at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina.
Kimbel Library is the central research facility of Coastal Carolina University and houses more than 250,000 books spread across multiple floors. The building features modern study spaces and computer equipment designed to support academic work for students and faculty members.
The library was named after William and Maud Kimbel and opened in 1977 with an initial collection of about 55,000 books. It was designed from the start to grow and accommodate larger collections as the university expanded.
The library houses the Horry County Oral History Project, a collection of recorded interviews and transcripts that capture local stories and traditions from the region. These recordings allow visitors to hear firsthand accounts from people who lived through important moments in the area.
The library welcomes university students, faculty, and visitors seeking research support in its spaces. The building is easy to locate on campus and offers various work areas with different noise levels to suit different study needs.
The library underwent major renovations in 2002 that added modern study spaces while respecting the structure of the original building. This upgrade allowed the collection to expand significantly while improving visitor comfort throughout.
