Hope Town, Colonial settlement on Elbow Cay, The Bahamas.
Hope Town is a colonial settlement on Elbow Cay with colorful wooden houses that reflect traditional loyalist architecture. The narrow streets wind between these pastel-painted buildings that continue to define the character of the community.
The settlement began in 1785 when residents fleeing the American Revolution arrived seeking refuge. These loyalist families chose this location to rebuild their lives in a new land.
The settlement takes its name from the new beginning its earliest residents sought when they arrived. Today, the community remains connected to its loyalist roots through the way residents maintain their homes and preserve the distinctive character of their narrow streets.
The town center is best explored on foot or by bicycle since motor vehicles are restricted there. Plan to move slowly through the narrow streets and allow time to explore the surrounding areas by golf cart if needed.
The lighthouse at Elbow Reef has operated by hand since 1862 and still burns kerosene fuel. It ranks among the last of its kind to function in this traditional way.
