Pier 41, Ferry terminal at Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, United States
Pier 41 is a ferry terminal on the northern waterfront of San Francisco, from which boats run to Sausalito, Oakland, Vallejo, and Angel Island. The structure extends into San Francisco Bay with boarding areas, ticket counters, and waiting zones spread along its length.
The terminal opened in 1868 as a ferry landing connecting San Francisco to Sausalito, at a time when no bridges crossed the bay. For decades it remained the main way to travel between the city and the communities on the opposite shore.
Pier 41 sits in the northern waterfront area known as the Embarcadero, where the ferry dock blends into a stretch of tourist activity around Pier 39. Locals heading to work share the same boarding area with visitors on their way to Alcatraz or Angel Island, giving the place a mixed and unhurried energy.
The F Market streetcar stops directly at the terminal, making it easy to reach from downtown without a car. Bicycle racks are on site, and drivers can use the parking facilities near Pier 39 just steps away.
From the departure point here, passengers can see the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz, and Angel Island all in one crossing. Few other spots in the city offer that same combination of views from a single vantage point on the water.
