Guardians of the Gate Sea Lions Statue, Bronze sculpture at Pier 39 in San Francisco, United States
The Guardians of the Gate presents three sea lions in a family group, with two adults and a pup cast in Everdur bronze material.
Miles Metzger completed this sculpture in 1990, and the Smithsonian Institution's Save Outdoor Sculpture program documented it in 1992 after its dedication.
The sculpture captures the connection between San Francisco's urban landscape and marine wildlife through its representation of sea lion family behavior.
Located near the Embarcadero Center, this accessible sculpture allows visitors to sit and take photographs throughout operating hours.
The bronze statue stands among the most photographed sculptures in the United States, according to numerous reports to the artist.
