Pier 35, pier in San Francisco
Pier 35 is a large pier in San Francisco extending along The Embarcadero. It features spacious open areas with high ceilings and historic wooden beams, two levels for different events, and views overlooking the bay, Treasure Island, and the Bay Bridge.
Pier 35 was built starting in 1914 and completed in 1916, then served as a cruise ship terminal for lines like Grace Line and Princess Cruises. After a new cruise terminal opened at Pier 27 in 2014, it was repurposed for events, and since 2020 it has housed the historic ship SS Jeremiah O'Brien as a museum attraction.
The historic wooden structures and buildings at Pier 35 reflect San Francisco's long connection to maritime trade and travel. Visitors today can still experience that sense of seafaring heritage by walking across the deck and watching ships pass by.
Pier 35 is easy to reach and sits next to popular Fisherman's Wharf. The location has parking, but using public transit like BART or bus is recommended since these are readily available and reliable for getting around the waterfront.
The SS Jeremiah O'Brien, located at Pier 35 since 2020, is one of the few remaining World War II-era ships still afloat and open for public tours. This makes the pier a special place to experience an important piece of maritime history that many visitors overlook when focused on nearby Fisherman's Wharf.
